2023-24
Our perspectives are constantly shifting, but what demarcates that shift? When a kind stranger asks a child what school they go to, is it harmless or creepy? When a parent drunk texts their teenager, is it reckless or funny? The line is loose, wavering, and unclear.
This painting series is a commentary on the transition between naivety and corruption. Using personal memories as reference, I incorporate both the observed figure and abstraction to draw certain focal points within the paintings. I am interested in using different paint applications in this series—like obfuscating, smudging, masking and erasing—to emphasize these focal points. Each focal point represents the more lucid, defined moments within these memories. Through this application, the viewer is confronted with the same mental disentanglement and perspective shifts as these memories have done for me.
